Claims

One of the core services of the University, College & Institute Protection Program (UCIPP) is providing claims and litigation management services for claims that fall under UCIPP coverage.

Our claims personnel review reported incidents to determine whether coverage is available under the UCIPP Coverage Agreements. Where there is coverage, they will then decide what steps are necessary for handling the claim or potential claim. Depending on the nature and severity of the incident, this may involve requesting further information from the organization, retaining an independent adjuster, or retaining legal counsel.

A University, College or Institute, upon learning of a property or liability incident, occurrence or accident which may reasonably give rise to a claim, must promptly give notice to UCIPP.  An Incident Report is to be completed and sent to the UCIPP claims department. Ideally, such notice will be forwarded immediately after an incident has occurred.

Claims and potential claims include:

  • Human Rights Complaints.

  • Civil Resolution Tribunal notifications and;

  • Small Claims Notices of Claim;

  • BC Supreme Court Notices of Civil Claim;

  • Requests for compensation;

  • Allegations of negligence;

  • Injuries to students, visitors or others;

  • Sudden and accidental damage to owned or leased property

Incident Reports should be emailed or faxed directly to the UCIPP claims department at the number(s) noted below. Liability incidents of a sensitive nature may be reported directly by phone or email to request contact from a claims examiner.  Employee injuries falling under WorkSafeBC do not need to be reported as UCIPP does not provide coverage for them.
